The Infinite Man
Then we get to the major letdown with The Infinite Man: this really is a story about a guy trying to get the girl, no matter what. And that’s it.

Ethical quandaries, temporal paradoxes and grandiose tragedy are all on the menu, and Steins;Gate goes through all of them one by one.

I’m at a loss to understand how effortlessly writer/directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller managed to combine what is basically a 100 minute toy commercial into an incredibly witty, self-referential and downright poignant movie such as this.

One thing that really impressed in Vol. II are the scenes Gainsbourg shares with Jamie Bell. His character of K provides a specific service, the kind that no one else can, and his scenes crackle with ominous tension.

This, in isolation, is enough to set Nymphomaniac apart from the bulk mainstream cinematic output. That we have a four hour, epic exploration of female sexuality is a rarity.

If the second half of this film were as good as the first, Anchorman 2 would have been at least close to matching the success of the original. As it stands now, however, it feels like a 90 minute film padded out to 119 minutes.

As far as this compares with Allen’s previous films, I’d class this as middling to great. It mightn’t hit the heights of Manhattan but not as bad as the likes of Hollywood Ending.

Let me get to the single most important facet of this review: it’s only worth seeing R.I.P.D. for the performances. Nothing else about the film is particularly memorable, but it’s the central four actors that make it an enjoyable use of one and a half hours.

As with all of Wright’s films, this is a slick, wondrously edited film. The action scenes are also unmatched. Beautifully choreographed and flawlessly executed, it feels like he’s put to good use the lessons he learned when orchestrating Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’s action packed moments.
