26th January - Film Review - Bran Nue Dae

It's a film that deals with Aboriginal issues without resorting to the two easiest knee jerk arguments, either by condemning white people for destroying the indigenous population's spirit and way of life, or blaming Aborigines for simply not 'trying harder' to be more white. It takes a much more original and intelligent route - everyone has work to do, and there's no one way to do it.

2009 in review New

23rd January - Coming Soon - The Road

The special effects are fantastic - this beats any of the more glamorous and showy dystopic visions hands down. The cinematography is completely devoid of warm colours (excepting some flashbacks); instead we are shown just how many shades of grey one can create.

The Road is released 28th January

16th January - Film Review - Sherlock Holmes   Reloaded

This is a really pretty film and it matches perfectly with Ritchie's cinematic style. Hans Zimmer's score is fantastic also - probably the best orchestral score of the year - and, of course, the performances are great. Everyone knew that Downey Jr. would make a great Holmes, and he does.

Hoopla Factor: Hoopla Factor = 3.5

Mired in the mess of editing cliches that betray this most modern version of the venerable franchise as 'a Guy Ritchie film', Sherlock Holmes features a confused and incomplete storyline and seems more like a preface to its inevitable sequels than a fully realised feature film in its own right.
