29th July - Film Review - Inception Inception is thrilling from beginning to end. The ease with which Nolan manages to navigate us through quite a mindfuck is remarkable. There is a lot of exposition going on, but its delivered with such urgency that it doesn't feel patronising.

Foster conveys all this and more in a facial tick, or a look that could break hearts the world over. Above all else he is required to be taciturn, and were it not for his great talent there is no way his character could be so successfully conveyed.

Miranda Otto's performance carries the film, essentially, and it's fascinating to watch such a shy, lonely and eager to please person as Meredith try to survive on a remote island with a population of exactly eight people.
South Solitary is released 29th August Rating: Hoopla Factor: |
This has got to be one of the best films about the theatre that I've ever seen. The week leading up to opening night is fantastic, coloured with the motley collection of thespians and all their idiosyncrasies. Anyone who's ever been on stage will recognise everything here.
Me and Orson Welles is released 29th July Rating: Hoopla Factor: |
That Cattrall's accent is so bad and no-one seems to have realised during production is astonishing, and one wonders why Polanski didn't just throw in the towel and hire a British actress to play this British character.

28th July - Film Review - The Housemaid (Hanyo) This is a particularly striking film to look at, and the film's luscious appearance is a perfect match for the lifestyle on display: enough food is thrown out at the end of the day to feed a large family, and wealth is conspicuous in every room of the home.
