Coverage

14th March - Film Review - The Hurt Locker   Reloaded

The performances are brilliant, with Jeremy Renner especially standing out as the cocksure bomb-tech Staff Sergeant William James. He manages the bravado of a man used to risking his life as his job with ease, while also completing the out-of-combat sequences with aplomb. This is really his movie, and he has taken charge and delivered.

The Hurt Locker is (finally) released on 18th February

Hoopla Factor: Hoopla Factor = 4.0

I keep hearing that its bipartisan nature is to be applauded, but I can't see how this film is bipartisan at all. It's basically about a bunch of people slowly going crazy because of the horrid job they do - there was nothing in the film that said what they were doing was worthwhile.

hoopla.nu congratulates the Oscar winners!

Another year's Academy Awards have been doled out and thank goodness the all-conquering Avatar failed to live up to its hype - there are several far more qualified films whose makers would quite rightly have been disappointed had the James Cameron juggernaut prevailed.

The big winner is The Hurt Locker which garnered 6 wins including Best Film, Director, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Original Screenplay. (As well as being at the top of Mark's year-in-review list for 2009!)

Avatar takes home 3 gongs (all related to its visual appearance, which fits with many estimations of that film being pretty to look at but shallow and poorly written), while Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, Up and Crazy Heart each won two golden statuettes.

Perhaps the least surprising victory for the evening was Christopher Waltz picking up Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, while more surprising is Sandra Bullock winning her first Oscar for her performance in The Blind Side - she may have been the favourite, but it is hard to see her win as anything other than a 'lifetime' award.

Congratulations again to all those lucky enough to take home the Oscar!

9th March - Film Review - LOL (Laughing Out Loud) ®

We're assaulted by rapid-fire scenes, introduced to a dozen teenagers - who all look the same - and witness several montages in a row. I can only assume that the producer and editor are the enemies of the slow-burn feature.

8th March - Film Review - The Blind Side

The Blind Side is an embarassment to the voters who have decided it is worthy to compete with such brilliant films as The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds - this has 'Midday Movie' written all over it, but is dressed in Hollywood finery such that people are inclined to take it more seriously than it deserves.
