In Search of a Midnight Kiss

The cinematography – thanks largely to the use of black & white – also contributes to the portrayal of Los Angeles’ seedier elements, (but) essentially the film is of two people meeting and then having a prolonged conversation while wandering around.

Once

It isn’t often that film critics agree, and even less often that they are moved. Every now and then however, a film wins the hearts of almost everyone – critics included – who sees it, and in 2007 that film is Once.

The Science of Sleep

That Gondry managed to make a dork out of Gael Garcia Bernal deserves a standing ovation. Bernal’s Stephane bears no resemblance to the suave, sexy young man we’ve seen before, and his social ineptitude is highlighted by the fact that his French is delightfully awful.

Paris, je t’aime

Tykwer’s film True is far and away the best of the eighteen. The extraordinary ability of Tykwer to coax an emotional response in such a short time is incredible. My heart was aching for the main characters before the halfway mark.

The Lake House

In a similar vein to Just Like Heaven, The Lake House is a romance concerning two people that are meant for each other but are kept only tantalisingly in reach via some supernatural phenomenon. Keanu Reeves (Constantine) and Sandra Bullock Continue reading The Lake House→

Brokeback Mountain

Ang Lee’s new film is a powerfully subtle love story, understated yet involving, and was enjoyable enough for me to momentarily forget that he directed Hulk in 2003. This is easily the most entertaining film of Lee’s I’ve witnessed, particularly Continue reading Brokeback Mountain→

Swept Away

Sadly, it seems that although there is much being offered here by way of subtext – political commentary on class and socialism, gender equality, and the changing roles of men and women in 1970’s society – there is just too much being said to allow a coherent point to be made.

The Road Home

Having been impressed by Hero (Ying Xiong), and excited by the trailer to the upcoming House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu), I jumped at the chance to watch The Road Home when it came on my local foreign Continue reading The Road Home→
