There are at least half a dozen plots holes to be found here, the most obvious ones being temporal – that is, why every time someone sets out during broad daylight they don’t find the house in the woods until full dark – as well as some glaring moments where it appears that scenes have been cut out of the film, but none of these are deal breakers.

The film is clearly aiming for silly, and never asks to be taken too seriously. Renner and Arterton aren’t called upon to do anything difficult in an acting sense, however their chemistry as sibling orphans really shines.

The absolute nadir of the film is a four and a half minute argument between Tom and Dan which is contained within a single, static shot. They argue about how to resolve their dilemma, going back and forth over the same points, before finally doing absolutely nothing whatsoever.

We also get some videophone call footage and, because it’s 2011, we get some scenes recorded on an iPhone. Of course, this is apparently an iPhone from the future, since it looks suspiciously like HD even when blown up to cinema screen size, but I was able to suspend disbelief nonetheless.

A sharper script would have made for a much better film, one that would have both embraced its inherent stupidity with glee and also come up with more interesting character interaction. Those wanting to actually be scared by a shark movie should look no further than 2010’s The Reef.

The Awakening is a great ghost story and a must for horror fans. Subtle without being sluggish, it boasts many tense moments, and even once or twice allows itself to become gloriously silly (but in a good way). Central to the success of the film is Hall’s performance.

Everyone’s good looking and sincere, but the script doesn’t really put much effort into differentiating them, except for one character who is on medication for schizophrenia and another who is part of an ethnic minority and thus of course imbued with links to the spirit world.

A lot of the publicity material talks about audiences throwing up in the cinema or leaving in disgust but the gore, whilst prominent, isn’t anything that a horror buff won’t have seen before. I wouldn’t be surprised if the handheld footage was what made people feel ill, however, because I spent a good couple of minutes looking away from the screen to try and alleviate my own motion sickness.

The 3D actually worked quite well because the film was deliberately over lit, whilst the sets, costumes and art design were sumptuously theatrical in their presentation. The slow motion action is balletic in execution and beautifully shot. If you leave common sense at the door, you’re in for a good time.
