That writer Abi Morgan, writer/director Steve McQueen and Fassbender manage to make Brandon somewhat likeable is a staggering achievement. As depressing and/or pathetic as it is to watch him responding to his cravings, it’s still possible to feel sympathy for the man.

It’s as if the budget couldn’t match the filmmakers’ ambition, so we’re subjected to crappy CGI and poor digital matte paintings again and again. I appreciate that the film had a tiny budget of $15 million, but that simply means they should have been more choosy when it came to visual effects shots.

Melancholia will bore and frustrate some. I found it to be very slow, before building up to an astonishing conclusion that left me breathless. For fans of von Trier, this is a must-see. For everyone else, just make sure you’re in a patient place and up for some doom and gloom.

As a study of tragedy (in the tradition of the Greeks), the royal princes aren’t quite accessible enough to really care for, and the prolonged time spent in their company seems only to postpone that which is of real interest.
