Wreck-It Ralph hits all the emotional and narrative beats from Screenwriting 101, but it does it so skilfully that the film never feels predictable. Filled with pathos, there are some incredible moments that really tug at the heartstrings, and like all good kids’ films, there are some great lessons to be learned.

The jokes come thick and fast, and I was sure that I was missing a whole host of visual gags in an effort to keep up, particularly in the opening act. If there is any one criticism I could level at the film, it would be that the humorous dialogue is simply too tightly packed in there.

The images we see in 3D films never seem truly curved, something which has always bugged me. In Tales of the Night, every single shot is a faultless example of the strengths of 3D. It’s an utterly immersive experience.

The film is predictable and the many car races are too unrealistic to become exciting. The cars’ actions have no resemblance to real world physics, which means we can never be swept up in the action. At least the original Cars had a breathtaking opening race.

The character animation is nearly non-existent – the expressions on their faces never change, and when they “walk” it almost seems as if an invisible hand is moving the pieces. Then again, there are some large-scale massive events which make use of the entire landscape, and these are uniformly brilliant.

To see Pixar returning to the well was a bit of a letdown. I mean, it’s really good, possibly on par with the first two (and this franchise surely sports two of the best sequels ever made), but it just felt like more Toy Story, something which I hadn’t ever craved.

Whilst I was enthralled by their tale (and wowed by the action sequences), the experience was ultimately disappointing, particularly if one was hoping for a plot to match the intricate and gorgeous visuals. If the story telling matched the production values, then this would be a fantastic feature indeed.

All the good science fiction concepts are here – it’s Prometheus, Frankenstein and a cautionary nuclear power tale all in one. Some of the most dramatic moments of the film succeed in the face of the previously mentioned flaws simply because the story is that good.

It’s all very obviously Gaiman – there’s a circus of sorts, a focus on the significance of names and above all his love of cats. Coraline has a wicked temper and a stubbornness that’s endearing rather than annoying, voiced perfectly by Dakota Fanning.
