Yeah I still disagree about the soldiers-for-hire. Yes, it’s an absurd group of people, but seeing feminism get intersectional in a blockbuster is new. And compare them to, say, the Warriors Three from Thor, who had zero depth. Here we had a sniper with PTSD, an actor who can’t get work because of the colour of his skin and a Native American who fights alongside a white American despite the fact Steven Trevor represents the people that ruined his homeland. They don’t get arcs, as such, but that’s a surprising amount of depth for such small roles.

I understand that part of it is the fact that we finally have a good female superhero movie – and it’s hard to ignore the fact that three women I know have explained to me they were brought to tears in the cinema simply to see a woman take centre stage and be heroic.

But it was also the first time in a long while I’ve been emotionally invested in the characters in a comic book movie, and I can’t stress enough how impressive Gadot is.

Steven Trevor’s role was really good too. Not only was there the obvious switching of the hero/heroine roles, but he was actually a better-written sidekick than any of the women are in male-led films.

I actually thought the action was excellent – better than anything we’ve seen from Marvel or DC for close to a decade.

I can’t be sure it’ll hold up time and time again but I know I’m dying to watch it again – and I have zero impetus to rewatch any of the other Marvel/DC movies I’ve seen in the last few years.

If it wasn’t obvious to any readers that you were going to love this, they haven’t been reading closely enough ;-P

I do wonder, though, if this hadn’t been the first *female-led superhero film since 2005’s Elektra* would you still have loved it as much?

I agree that Gadot does a reasonable job as Diana, but wouldn’t go to the extremes that you have.

The supporting cast of Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen are pretty fair, but I take issue with your characterisation of the soldiers-for-hire as having ‘depth’. There really is very little that explains their participation, and there is certainly no nuance in their portrayals.

Pine is ok, but he lacks charm for a leading man. (Although he is supposed to be the foil to Gadot’s leading woman.)

The scenes on Themyscira are pretty bland – up until the invasion sequence which is fun. The WWI scenes aren’t all that interesting either.

I know this isn’t fair to hold the director to account for, but both the Themyscira invasion and the trench warfare scene are ruined for anyone who has seen the trailers…

This is certainly a passable film, but I wonder if it will hold up so well after you watch it again? I enjoyed myself, but won’t be rushing back.

Thoughts?
