Stuart:Alex Ferrari's short film Cyn may be light on in terms of running time, but it certainly packs a mighty punch. Drawing inspiration from blaxploitation films, James Bond, and basically anything a little bit racy and over the top, Cyn clocks in at just over five minutes. This would have to be the only disappointment, actually - that it's over so quickly. The most frustrating thing about Ferrari's film is that it was completed in only 6 days - from script to completion. My first response to this little piece of information was disbelief, but the process is well documented on the website, so I'm gonna have to stick with jealousy for now. That the colour correcting process took longer than the editing is a good indication of how flashy this film looks. It may be filmed on HD, and feature a minimal number of shots, but the completed picture is very, very snazzy. Going for a dark and grimy look, perhaps similar to Saw (without the annoying frenetic editing), Cyn features a wonderful colour palate and some impressive lighting effects. Then there are the end titles, which give James Bond flicks a run for their money. Dan Cregan from Numb Robot visual effects house has crafted a title sequence that's quite frankly jaw dropping. To be honest it's a little bit much for a film that's only 5 minutes, but who gives a shit when it looks so damn cool?! The performances are strong, though some are more comfortable than others when it comes to the slang dialogue. A quick glimpse of Ferrari's resume shows just how busy he's been in the last ten years, and although his first feature is still forthcoming, I can't wait to see what happens when he gets a big budget behind him. The type of creativity and skill on display in Cyn makes me desperate to see what would happen if he had a top notch feature screenplay at his disposal (and say, a few million dollars).
