On several occasions, I was shocked by the audacity of the show, and the intelligent cruelty of some of the characters, who wouldn’t look out of place in your average Tarantino movie. This is a show that’s definitely for mature audiences.

Guilty Crown Collection One
The creators mention that one of their favourite shows was ‘Neon Genesis: Evangelion’, so its influence is all over here. Pop in some ‘Bubblegum Crisis’, some standard issue mechs, occasional awkward fan service and you’ve got an anime best of compilation.

This series is from the makers of ‘Cowboy Bebop’, and boy does it show. The opening titles alone feel like a beachside, Latin American version of that legendary show’s credit sequence, but the piecemeal approach the narrative is also similar.

Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo
I saw this film with a ‘Neon Genesis: Evangelion’ expert, and even she was lost. Where the first and second films were effectively compressed versions of episodes from the TV show, Evangelion 3.0 is something else entirely.

It would help if you’d seen Blood: The Last Vampire beforehand, but don’t expect to understand how the two are related for quite some time. A true re-imagining, Blood-C pulls no punches and is a stunning piece of work. A must for anime fans.
