Pretty much flawless, with two incredible performances from Monica Bleibtreu and Hannah Herzsprung. See it.

Love it or hate it, there is no middle ground with this film. Actually, it's not a film - it's a revelation. Love, death and a flaming sword - what more could you ask for? Darren Aronofsky's best feature to date, it's something I hope will come to be revered in years to come.

Where The Golden Compass may have failed to capture 'Northern Lights', this adaptation of Katherine Paterson's well-known book is spellbinding. It may have been marketed incorrectly as a Narnia rip-off, but the film is a beautiful, devastating tale of friendship, spirituality and the fantasies we create.

The same year in which the admittedly exciting Die Hard 4.0 (Live Free or Die Hard) felt like a death knell for the action movie, Hot Fuzz managed to love and laugh at the genre simultaneously. Possibly overlong, though more accomplished than Shaun of the Dead, this will surely eclipse any of the dodgy-looking Hollywood movies Simon Pegg has lined up.

5. Clubland (Introducing the Dwights)A heart-warming drama that really should have taken the Aussie box office by storm. Some truly memorable moments raise this from being simply a humdrum feel good movie.

Vastly underrated (and under appreciated), Alex Garland's and Danny Boyle's next film post 28 Days Later steals from a whole host of films that came before. The end result is a truly fantastic sci-fi flick.

Whilst the trailer gave away too much, it's hard to imagine that anything could have gone wrong when you pit Judi Dench against Cate Blanchett. Their performances push the material well into über-thriller territory, but it works all the same.

Hard going, but ultimately rewarding film. Instead of focussing on the big issue, it concerns itself with the minutiae of a backyard abortion in Bucharest during Communist rule.

Until this one, I've never wanted to re-watch a Harry Potter film - the Order of the Phoenix actually packs an emotional wallop.

2007-made silent movie? Why not? Rolf de Heer proving he's still got some tricks up his sleeve.
