Another Earth posterAnother Earth

Rhoda could have easily drawn animosity or frustration from audiences, but instead Marling's turn is an utterly emotive performance, brilliantly subtle without ever becoming self-indulgent. She's present throughout pretty much the entire film, and make no mistake - this is her film.

Future, The posterThe Future

We see a couple of directionless thirtysomethings certain that they should be taking drastic measures, but not entirely sure why or how best to achieve it. It may be that at age 31, my own insecurities were hampering my enjoyment of the film, but I felt like the viewer would gain nothing from this bleak narrative.

Innkeepers, The posterThe Innkeepers

It's a long while before we see anything actually horrifying, though unfortunately the tension is much more successful than the scares themselves, which aren't quite as powerful as they should be. The film makes a wonderful use of its location (which is a real inn situated in Connecticut) and the restrictive setting means we really get a feel for the place.

Tales of the Night posterTales of the Night (Les contes de la nuit)

The images we see in 3D films never seem truly curved, something which has always bugged me. In Tales of the Night, every single shot is a faultless example of the strengths of 3D. It's an utterly immersive experience.

TrollHunter posterTrollHunter (Trolljegeren)

The three young filmmakers are convincingly played by Glenn Erland Tosterud, Johanna Mørck and Tomas Alf Larsen, but there isn't much character-based drama for them to sink their teeth into. This is perhaps a flaw, though the footage itself is so entertaining that it never really matters.
