A Scanner Darkly posterA Scanner Darkly

Such a freakish film could easily be nothing more than a curiosity, but there is a powerful emotional thread running throughout - this is a tragedy of sorts, focusing on substance abuse and the way it affects not only the abuser but the people around them, and indeed the world as a whole.

Host, The posterThe Host (Gweomul)

The Host is actually a cut above the average monster movie flick - the creature's initial rampage is brilliant. The first act skilfully blends humour with horror, and that on its own is worth the price of admission, which is a good thing considering it goes downhill from there on.

Tideland posterTideland

Jodelle Ferland gives a startlingly impressive performance (especially considering her age) and I sincerely hope there were psychologists on set to help her through the film's more disturbing moments. She is the focus of pretty much every scene, and manages to somehow carry the confounding film on her shoulders.
