A Christmas Tale posterA Christmas Tale (Un conte de Noël)

Deneuve is inaccessible and often seems to be turning in (yet another) performance while on auto-pilot. Amalric, on the other hand, creates the most interesting of the main characters, and allows a little charm and wit into his performance of the black sheep.

Baby Love posterBaby Love (Comme les autres)

One would think that this film would at the very least break some gender stereotypes. Alas, this isn't the case. At their worst, these two simply play out roles we've seen hundreds of times before.

Ca$h posterCa$h

The editing is deliberately tacky - filled with wipes that come with their own sound effects - and the jazzy, funky soundtrack sounds like public domain music rather than written for the film. It's really surprising how shoddy the production looks at times.

It's Hard Being Loved by Jerks posterIt's Hard Being Loved by Jerks (C'est dur d'etre aime par des cons)

Following the immediate pre-trial period, the trial itself and its verdict, filmmaker Daniel Leconte has produced an entertaining and inspiring documentary about the principle of free speech and the role of the free press. Additionally, Leconte and his subjects dare to address the question of whether religion should be material for satire.

Love Me No More posterLove Me No More (Deux jours à tuer)

The internal conflict evident behind his eyes is a hard acting task to successfully pull off, and yet Dupontel succeeds. Perhaps it is recollections of past performances that subconsciously encourage a degree of sympathy with his character, because, as written in the screenplay, he is intolerable.

Séraphine posterSéraphine

The film is shot beautifully, with the French landscape vividly brought to life and the small town lifestyle under the shadow of two World Wars and the Great Depression evocatively demonstrated. Costume design and art direction allow the sense of reality to pervade this biopic and do justice to Provost's vision.
